A large Karo / Pakpak / Toba container featuring one Batak man on a mythical Naga Morsarang.
The Nagas body, carved from genuine buffalo horn were used for storing traditional medicines, jewelry or documents.
Beautiful Batak text motifs adorn the Naga.
The stopper resembling the Nagas head is carved from wood.

Batak is a collective term used to identify a number of ethnic groups found in the highlands of North Sumatra Indonesia.
Toba Batak are known traditionally for their weaving, wood carving and especially ornate stone tombs.
Their burial and marriage traditions are very rich and complex.
The burial tradition includes a ceremony in which the bones of ones ancestors are re interred several years after death.
