Description

Oceanic Art Korwar figure, rare Manduko Korwar sculpture.

Natural splits due to old age are visible on the wooden statue but otherwise still in good condition, no insect & no decay, it is well kept. Circa 1940.

Korwar Cenderawasih images served as supernatural intermediaries, allowing the living to communicate with the dead. When a family member died, his or her relatives summoned a carver, typically a religious specialist, who created a Korwar and enticed the spirit of the deceased to enter it.
